Tannins

Tannins are compounds in wine that can cause a rough or drying feeling in your mouth.

How it works

You may recognise a similar sensation from strong black tea. Tannins can come from grape skins, seeds, stems or wood. This is about their effect in your mouth, not a particular aroma.

How to use this when choosing

If you like gentle wines, look for descriptions such as little drying grip or soft tannins. A drying sensation does not by itself tell you whether the wine is sweet.
