Pét-nat

Short for pétillant naturel: wine bottled while fermentation is still underway. Carbon dioxide produced inside the bottle creates the fizz.

Simply explained

Pét-nat goes into the bottle before fermentation has finished; the bubbles being made are then caught under the closure.

What happens

Pétillant naturel commonly refers to sparkling or semi-sparkling wine from one fermentation that begins in tank and finishes in bottle. This differs from methods using a separate second fermentation.

What this tells you about wine

Cloudiness or sediment may occur, but they do not define pét-nat. Sweetness, pressure and disgorgement vary from one wine to another.
