Appellation

An appellation is a protected place name for wine made under specified production rules.

How it works

On a label, it means more than a location: a producer using the name must follow that area's rules. These may cover the grape varieties allowed or how the wine is made.

How to use this when choosing

Two wines with the same appellation can still taste different. Compare the producer, vintage and flavour description as well as the place name.
